What are Goalkeeper Gloves?

Many goalie gloves use reinforced German latex, which provides enhanced hand protection for deflective movements. Within the backhand of the glove is the punch zone. That's the backhand area that specifically protects the hands from injury and where manufacturers add more material for cushioning.

Benefits of Goalkeeper Gloves

Comfort

Goalkeeper gloves are also designed for comfort. They are typically padded to provide cushioning for the hands and fingers, making it more comfortable for goalkeepers to catch and hold the ball throughout a game.

Enhanced performance

By providing better grip, protection, and comfort, goalkeeper gloves can help goalkeepers perform at their best during training and matches. The confidence that comes from wearing quality gloves can also positively impact a goalkeeper's performance on the field.

Grip

One of the most important functions of goalkeeper gloves is to provide a better grip on the ball. The latex or other sticky material used on the palms of the gloves helps goalkeepers catch and hold onto the ball more effectively. This grip is especially important when dealing with shots, crosses, and high balls.

Protection

Goalkeeper gloves offer protection to the hands and fingers when making saves. The padding on the gloves helps to cushion the impact of the ball, reducing the risk of injury from hard shots or collisions with players.

Weather conditions

In wet or rainy conditions, gloves can help goalkeepers maintain a better grip on the ball. The materials used in goalkeeper gloves are designed to provide traction even in wet conditions, allowing goalkeepers to make saves more effectively.

Types of Goalkeeper Gloves

Roll-finger goalkeeper gloves/palm
The Roll Finger Glove is probably the most popular glove palm for professional goalkeepers and this type of palm is suitable for goalkeepers with thin, slender hands or fingers.

Negative cut goalkeeper gloves/palm
Negative Cut gloves are generally suitable for goalkeepers with broad hands and or fingers.

Flat palm goalkeeper gloves/palm
Palms gloves, like Negative Cut goalkeeper gloves, are generally suitable for goalkeepers with broad hands and or fingers.

Hybrid cut palm goalkeeper gloves/palm
Hybrid Cut is normally when the little finger and index finger of the glove is a Roll Finger and the middle two fingers are Negative Cut or Flat Palm. This is normally for keepers who have irregularly shaped hands or fingers.

Components of Goalkeeper Gloves

The backhand of soccer goalie gloves

The backhand of goalie gloves consists of material that protects the hand from injury when punching the ball. Without the backhand, punching the ball wouldn't be a pleasant experience for goalkeepers - wrist and hand injuries would make the punch a riskier maneuver.

That said, the strength and durability of the backhand depend on the quality manufacturers use for it, specifically, the type of latex. For example, many goalie gloves use reinforced German latex, which provides enhanced hand protection for deflective movements.

Within the backhand of the glove is the punch zone. That's the backhand area that specifically protects the hands from injury and where manufacturers add more material for cushioning. On a side note, the backhand is often the most decorative part of modern goalie gloves. That's where glove manufacturers go all out, adding their most artful designs.

The palm of soccer goalie gloves

The palm is a big deal because that's where much of the action happens for goalkeepers. Of course, the palm is the inside of the glove itself, and it matters because that's the part goalkeepers use to catch or deflect the ball with most.

The key to choosing goalie gloves with excellent palm construction is to look for good grip and tackiness/stickiness. Ultimately, this boils down to the quality of the latex used in the palm. You want goalie gloves that use a blend of more latex and less plastic in the palm, as this increases the tackiness and grip of the gloves.

Not only does the right combination increase the grip of soccer goalie gloves, but they also increase their longevity, so the gloves last longer. Aside from latex, the cut of goalie gloves can affect the feel and function of the palms. For example, a flat palm construction gives a looser feel with the ball in hand.

The fingers of soccer goalie gloves

The fingers of soccer goalie gloves are the most prominent and recognizable component. But if you want elite goalkeeping performance (who doesn't), don't take the fingers in a glove for granted.

First off, think about the fit and feel of the glove's fingers. Some gloves may feel stiffer or looser. Neither is necessarily better than the other, but if you're not comfortable in one fit, then it will distract you and may reduce your ball control. So the right fit is crucial.

The closure of soccer goalie gloves

The closure isn't part of the gloves, but rather the method of putting it on and taking it off. That said, the closure is related mainly to certain design aspects of the goalie gloves. Most goalie gloves use one of four components to make closure more efficient. They include:

Hook and loop
Puller
Puller tab
Bandage strap

The most common closures are hook and loop ones, often using an adjustable flap that allows the keeper to loosen or tighten the glove as needed. Bandage straps are the most supportive, thanks to how tightly they wrap around the wrist.

Materials matter
The journey begins with an exploration of the materials used in crafting these specialized gloves. Most gloves are made up of several key materials, these can usually be grouped into two groups. Palm materials and backhand materials. The Palm of a goalkeeping glove is by far the most important, this is where you have to weigh up the different qualities each Latex Palm has. Some latex palms are far more grippy than others, however this enhanced grip usually comes at the detriment of durability. Some latex's are much more suited to Astroturf pitches as they aren't as soft. Latex comes in all different grades and qualities with the most popular being a 4mm German contact latex. German Contact Latex is seen as the premium but it's not always the best suited.

Design and prototyping:
Now whilst we're deciding on a range of materials to use on a new range we also must design the new range. This becomes harder and harder with each year that passes. It seems hard to stand out from the crowd and create something fresh and new, this is usually the most time-consuming part of developing a new glove range. We start initially by sketching rough in paper form, then take these designs to the computer and craft files that we can send directly to our manufacturing side. From initial sketches to prototyping it can take many months to perfect a glove design. Even once the design is finalized it will often see 2-5 revisions once we have the samples back from our manufacturers. We will usually sample several different cuts and color schemes when getting samples to make sure the design isn't impacted when these other cuts are used. Once we are happy with the prototypes we will then send them out to a handful of our trusted keepers and coaches to undergo rigorous testing before reaching the final product stage.

Cutting-edge technology:
Modern glove production incorporates state-of-the-art technology. 3D printing, silicone injection, plastic molding & CAD modeling, and other innovations play a crucial role in enhancing the performance and quality of our goalkeeping gloves.

Precision stitching:
The stitching process is where functionality meets aesthetics. This is the most overlooked aspect of the whole process. High-quality fixing and stitching separates basic gloves from a high-end premium product. The small details really matter and lead to pure comfort when stitched correctly. The majority of our gloves are stitched by machines operated by only the best craftsman. The stitching techniques are employed to ensure durability, flexibility, and an optimal fit.

Quality control and testing:
Goalkeepers demand perfection, and rightly so! Our manufacturers understand the importance of stringent quality control. Each Pair is checked thoroughly and goes through a 6-stage process before it even leaves the factory.

How to Maintain Goalkeeper Gloves

1. It is a good idea to have two pairs of gloves, one for match play and one for training. This way you do not wear out your match gloves during training.

2. To get the most grip out of your gloves, prior to use you should dampen the palms with water.

3. Avoid unnecessary abrasion. Do not allow the latex of your palm to touch the Velcro on your wrist strap when taking off your gloves. In training, do not get up using your palms, instead push yourself up with your fist.

4. After training, wash your gloves in warm water and allow them to dry naturally. It is important to treat your gloves gently. Do not use a scrubber or apply heat to dry your gloves. Drying out natural moisture from your gloves will weaken their durability and grip by making them brittle.

5. Store your gloves in a cool environment. Do not leave them out in a hot, dry environment (such as a hot car or lying out in the sun).

How to Determine the Right-Fitting Goalkeeper

Measure your hand size: Use a tape measure to measure both the length and width of your hand.

Check the sizing chart: We provide a sizing chart that indicates the hand size range for each glove size. You can use this chart to determine the size of the glove that is most appropriate for your hand size.

Try on the gloves: Once you have determined the size of the glove that is appropriate for your hand size, it is important to try on the gloves to ensure that they fit correctly. The gloves should fit snugly, but not too tightly. They should also allow for a full range of motion in your fingers and wrist.

Adjust the straps: Most goalkeeper gloves have adjustable straps that allow you to customize the fit of the gloves. Make sure to adjust the straps to achieve a comfortable and secure fit.

Break in the gloves: It is important to break in your gloves before using them in a game. This can be done by wearing them during training sessions or by using a ball to gently stretch the gloves. Breaking in the gloves will help them conform to the shape of your hand and make them more comfortable to wear.

How to Wash Goalkeeper Gloves

1. If you want to make the most out of your goalkeeper gloves, wash them immediately after use in warm water (a maximum of 30º C).

2. Rinse and soak the gloves in the sink and make sure that you rinse off all of the glove cleaners if you have decided to wash with a solution, as leaving a glove cleaner on gloves can potentially cause damage.

3. The gloves should be washed by hand, using your thumbs to scrub dirt off lightly - applying too much pressure can tear pieces of the latex. We do not recommend using a form of brush or scrubber for this reason.

4. It is not necessary, but applying a glove cleaner to the gloves will help ensure that all of the dirt is removed and make the process quicker. Ensure you follow the instructions of the solution you have purchased.

5. Leave your gloves to dry naturally, it should take around a day. For more information on the best way to dry your gloves keep reading.

What Are The Different Goalkeeper Glove Latex Types

Goalkeeping latex gloves can be classified as below:

Contact Latex type, best suited to dry weather conditions. Wet weather conditions are also suitable for it, but its effectiveness is less when compared to the 'Cyclone Latex'. Additionally, it has good durability.

Cyclone Latex type is best suited to wet weather conditions. This is equally durable when compared to Contact latex.

Mega Grip Latex type is somewhat suitable for dry weather but not that good when compared to Contact Latex and Cyclone Latex. The durability is also the lowest when compared to other latex types.

Giga Grip Latex type is an option when you are looking for a multi-weather pair of goalkeeper gloves that suits dry and wet weather and has good durability.

Supersoft Latex type, has a good grip, and does well with dampening conditions but is less sticky as compared to other latex types. This latex type also lacks good durability.

Quartz+ Latex type is an excellent all-around durable latex. Provides a good grip and works well in both dry and wet conditions.

How to Choose the Right Cut for Your Goalkeeper Gloves

Flat cut

Flat Cut is the most traditional glove cut, and it is the cut that has been used for the longest time. The cut can be recognized by the stitches that are on the outside of the latex and by its flat palm. This glove cut is a great choice for the keeper who wants a glove with great ball control and a looser fit, as the fingers are very spacious. This cut is used by for example Liverpool's Simon Mignolet and Juventus' Gianluigi Buffon. Other names: Expanse Cut, Regular Cut

Roll finger cut

Roll finger Cut is a very popular glove cut among the best goalkeepers. The cut can be recognized by its large contact area and a larger amount of latex on the palm than for instance on a Flat Cut palm. The latex is rolled around the fingers which makes the glove perfect for a goalkeeper who wants a tighter fit and a great latex-to-ball contact. This cut is preferred by for instance Manchester City's Claudio Bravo and Barcelona's Marc Ter Stegen. Other names: Gun Cut, Surround Cut

Negative cut

Negative Cut has probably become the most used glove cut among professional goalkeepers. The cut can be recognized by its stitches being on the inside contrary to the other glove cuts. This gives you a tighter fit and ball control as if you were playing barehanded. This cut is the preferred glove cut for Bayern Münich's Manuel Neuer and Porto's Iker Casillas. Other names: Seemless Touch Cut, Inverted Cut, Inseam Cut

Hybriderne

Other than the already mentioned glove cuts, many of the brands experiment with mixing the traditional cuts to create so-called hybrids. For example, there is the Negative Surround Cut, which combines Roll finger and Negative Cut by rolling the latex around the fingers but keeping the stitches on the inside. Shotgun Gut is a hybrid where some fingers have a Roll finger Cut while the other fingers have a Negative Cut. The hybrids are interesting because they give you the best features from the different cuts so if you dare to experiment you might find your new favourite glove among the hybrids.

FAQ

Q: What is a goalie glove?

A: For example, many goalie gloves use reinforced German latex, which provides enhanced hand protection for deflective movements. Within the backhand of the glove is the punch zone. That's the backhand area that specifically protects the hands from injury and where manufacturers add more material for cushioning.

Q: What is the definition of goalkeeper gloves?

A: Most goalkeepers also wear gloves to improve their grip on the ball, and to protect themselves from injury. Some gloves now include rigid plastic spines down each finger to help prevent injuries such as jammed, fractured, and sprained fingers.

Q: What makes a good goalkeeper glove?

A: Negative cut - With a negative cut, the seam sits on the inside of the glove. The palm is made with a single piece of latex with gussets between the palm and backhand of the glove. Negative cuts offer a tight fit and better control and are also advantageous for female goalkeepers and goalies with small hands.

Q: Should I buy goalkeeper gloves?

A: Goalkeeper gloves are essential to every soccer team's defense, along with the goalkeepers who wear them. They enhance grip, cushion the hand, and ultimately help goalkeepers block, catch, and punch the ball. Choose the best goalkeeper gloves suited for your needs and hand size/shape with our GOALKEEPER GLOVE GUIDE.

Q: Why do goalkeepers put vaseline on their gloves?

A: He added: "The only thing I can think of is that it helps his grip. A lot of goalkeepers like to have their gloves a little bit wet because the rubber [the grippy latex material on the palms] can sometimes be so stringy that it takes a bit of feeling out of your hands."

Q: Why do goalkeepers wet their gloves?

A: During Play: When your goalkeeper gloves are in use, occasionally dampen the palms of the gloves with water to get the best possible grip and durability from the latex palm. Latex is not designed to be dry. This is why you will often see pros on TV squirt water on them or even spit, to make the latex come alive.

Q: How long do goalie gloves last?

A: As a general rule of thumb, I typically tell parents that you can expect goalkeeper gloves to last 2-3 months.

Q: Are expensive goalkeeper gloves worth it?

A: Price: Select a soccer glove that fits within your budget whether the glove lasts two seasons or degrades and wears within the first season. Goalkeeper gloves that are expensive do not necessarily last longer. They will have more features and comfort, better overall constructions, as well as patented technology.

Q: Is dish soap bad for goalie gloves?

A: Wash with a mild foaming soap free of dies, phosphates, and other harsh chemicals. Dish soap, shampoo, and many hand soaps are too harsh to wash with. Hand washing allows the goalkeeper to gently scrub the dirt and work all areas of the glove gently with the fingers.

Q: Can you put goalie gloves in the dryer?

A: Never use direct heat like a hairdryer or place them in the sun to dry. Although it may be tempting, you should never put your gloves in the washer or dryer either. These methods can damage the gloves, especially the palms.

Q: Are goalkeeper gloves meant to be tight?

A: Tip: You do not want your gloves too tight and touching the very tips of the fingers, nor do you want too much excess space causing it to feel "floppy". A glove that is too tight could tear/rip easier and a glove too spacious won't instill confidence.

Q: How to pick goalie gloves?

A: Goalkeeping gloves should be worn slightly larger than hand size. A keeper's finger should not be touching the tip of the glove nor should there be excessive room that makes the glove feel sloppy., Generally, 1/4" to 1/2" over the end of your fingertip is optimal, or a thumbnail length if you don't have a ruler handy.

Q: Are goalkeeper gloves supposed to be sticky?

A: The Latex Palms: The Sticky Secret. The secret behind the stickiness of goalkeeper gloves lies in the latex palms. These palms are designed to provide an optimal grip on the soccer ball. The latex material is naturally tacky, similar to rubber, making it the perfect choice for enhancing grip.

Q: Why do goalkeepers tape their fingers?

A: GOALKEEPER CROSS TAPING
It helps to prevent excessive force from being applied to the joints in the fingers when gripping and grappling. This increases your grip strength by moving the strength emphasis away from your fingers to your wrist and hands.

Q: How to break in goalkeeper gloves?

A: How to break the gloves in. Tape the fingers in your goalie gloves back, wrapping them with electrical or masking tape so they're bent back and spaced apart. Test the gloves by catching or deflecting the ball or doing push-ups.

Q: Should you wash goalkeeper gloves after every use?

A: Right after each use, ensure you wash them (see details below) and leave them to dry naturally. This is the most important step to extend the life of the gloves: if you leave them in your bag to dry out, the latex could get brittle and start cracking, losing durability.

Q: How many gloves should a goalkeeper have?

A: It is recommended that goalkeepers have at least three pairs of gloves, one pair for training, one pair for games, and a backup pair for games. The use of one pair for practice keeps the game pair fresh and makes them last longer.

Q: How often should you clean your goalkeeper gloves?

A: Every week
Washing goalkeeper gloves should be done every week to make sure that the gloves don't spread bacteria and cause illness.

Q: How to preserve goalie gloves?

A: Store goalie gloves in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Exposing gloves to heat can dry out the latex, leading to cracking and reduced grip, which can be avoided with proper storage.

Q: How do I make my goalkeeper gloves last?

A: Dampen (not soak) your gloves before and while playing. A little bit of water activates the latex. Keep a bottle by your goal (use spit as a last-ditch scenario). DO NOT, under any circumstances, pour hand sanitizer or other drying agents on your palms.
